Cabrini, Frances-Xavier

Cabrini, Frances-Xavier
(1850–1917)
   Saint, Missionary and Order Founder.
Cabrini was born in S. Angelo Lodigiano, Italy and she initially trained to be a teacher. She volunteered to be a missionary in China, but was rejected for training on the grounds of health. Undaunted, in 1880 she founded her own women’s missionary society, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, and herself worked in New York among the newly arrived immigrants. Her order spread throughout America, Europe and Asia and has supported numerous schools and hospitals. Cabrini was canonised in 1946 and she is regarded as the patron saint of refugees and emigrants.
